TOP 5 HEAVY METAL albums of 2009

by AM 30. December 2009 19:26

There were many important Heavy Metal releases in 2009.  This is a list of what I consider to be the cream of crop.  It includes Thrash Metal, Hardcore, and straight forward Metal releases.  Comments welcomed.

1. Goatwhore - Carving Out the Eyes of God

"Carving Out the Eyes of God" is will be marked down as Goatwhore's "Dark Side of the Moon".  Many great metal bands emerged this year with quality albums, and Goatwhore was among the top of that list.  The album is raw, punk, thrash metal, black metal and screaming with anthems such as "Razor Fleshed Devoured" & "Provoking the Ritual Of Death"

Be warned, this album is HEAVY!

Favorite song:  Apocalyptic Havoc

2 Dark Age - Acedia

Hamburg natives released this gem in November 09 and it only took one listen to convince it was a powerful metal album.  It combines growling & melodic vocals, really phat guitar riffs, and keyboards to hold the whole together.  Simply put, it's fun to listen to!

Hope to hear more from this artist in 2010.

for previews, click HERE.

Favorite song:  Zeitgeist (Ghost in a Machine)

3 Lazarus A.D. - The Onslaught

Lazarus A.D.
stormed out of the gates and has become one of the hottest new thrash metal bands around.  The band has been working hard on the road, opening up for Testament and now headlining their own shows.

Tracks like "Lust", "Absolute Power" and "Who I Really Am" are examples are good old fashioned metal.

for previews, click HERE.

Favorite song:  Who I Really Am

4 Slayer - World Painted Blood

Slayer unleashed this intense and blood filled beast.  Every time a major metal act releases a new album, expectations are high, not only for the fans, but for the entire metal community.  Slayer did not disappoint with "World Painted Blood".

It's fast, heavy and everything you would expect from the thrash metal legends.

Favorite Song: Human Strain

5. Hatebreed - Hatebreed

Hatebreed's popularity continued to explode in 2009.  They were the first Hardcore Metal band to sell over 1 million copies in the US alone with this 2009 self titled release.

This is album drives from beginning to end.  It's aggressiveness will lift and smash any mosh pit.   Hatebreed combines a melting pot of Hardcore, Thrash Metal, even a cool instrumental piece "Undiminished" and a few Slayer inspired trax ("Between Hell and a Heartbeat" & "Hands of a Dying Man").

Favorite song:  No Halos for the Heartless

TOP 5 HARD ROCK albums of 2009

by AM 28. December 2009 23:39

Here are what I consider the Top 5 Hard Rock albums released in 2009.  Some great albums on this list.

1. Baroness - Blue Record

Baroness' Blue Record is just off the charts, one of the great albums of 2009 in any genre!

The Red Album was a revelation for many who discovered Baroness for the first time.  If someone told me then, that the same band would release an album even better than "Red Album" in 2009, it would have been hard to believe.  Well, they did it.  I beg you, if you have not discovered this band yet, please put it on your 2010 dues list.

From the first notes on "Bullhead's Psalm", to the high octane energy of "A Horse Called Golgotha"  &  "O'er Hell and Hide",  Blue Record is filled with all the elements of a Classic Album.

If they keep releasing albums as high quality as the last 2, Baroness will be one of the great Rock bands of the next decade.

Blue Record song clips, click HERE.

Favorite Track:  I can't pick just 1, they all kick major ass!

2. Priestess - Prior to The Fire

Priestess' sophmore album is as in your face, hard - heavy rockin' album as you can get!   Songs like "Ladykiller", "It Baffles The Mind", & "We Ride" are meant to crank loud!  This is raw, pure good Heavy Rock!  Plain and simple.

We look forward to hearing what future releases hold for the Montreal rockers!

Favorite Song:  Trapped In Space and Time

3. Chickenfoot

As the name suggests, this album is COOL.  Let's face it, we knew it would be something memorable when you saw the line up - Joe Satriani, Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith!

Aside from the great musicianship, the album consists of well written, well produced and guitar heavy driven Rock!  Michael Anthony shows why he was the special ingredient in Van Halen and the Satch man just lets it rip on these songs.  A must.

Favorite song: Learning to Fall

4. Them Crooked Vultures

Supergroup consisting of Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones and Joshua Homme.  After first reviewing it a few months ago, this album has really grown on me and even songs I found average are becoming favorites.  This is an album for music fans.  One can really appreciate the collective energy and experience from the different generations of Rock stars.  A collective born from one of the greatest bands in the world,  to the groundbreaking Nirvana, to Queens of the Stone Age who have made their way as respected force in Rock.

There are inspiring jam sessions, ultra cool organ parts, but overall, the songs here just groove as you would expect from John Paul Jones.

Favorite song is still: Scumbag Blues

5. Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue

Alice In Chains' 2009 release got some critics complaining that the band got a Layne Staley soundalike.  Who cares!?  William DuVall is good, and the songs are good.  If anything, it gives fans a welcoming familiar sound.  DuVall gives a new life to Alice in Chains and leads them forward without compromising the signature Alice In Chains sound.

The guitars riffs are addictive with subtle nuances.  Overall great album, with key trax including "Check My Brain", "Acid Bubble", "Private Hell".

Favorite Song:  "All Secrets Known"

TOP 5 PROG ALBUMS of 2009

by AM 23. December 2009 21:57

2009 was a great year for Prog Music.  Here is a list of the TOP 5 Progressive Rock / Metal albums released in 2009.

1. Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect

"The Great Misdirect" was the surprise record of the year for me.  The sticker on the CD read "A mix of Slayer and Genesis".  A good analogy, and while they borrow elements from those artists, B.T.B.A.M. carry their own weight and have shaped their unique sound.

This album has everything you would expect from a classic prog album.  Complex, yet simple.    Seamless blend of classical and acoustic guitars, honky piano, great keyboard solos, growling and melodic vocals, catchy riffs, all the while incorporating elaborate instrumental time shifting parts.

We will hear more of Between The Burried And Me in the near future I reckon!

Favorite track:  Swim to the Moon

2.  Mastodon - Crack the Skye

The break out album from the Atlanta natives shook the metal world in 2009.  Mastodon's past albums are considered by many as classics (think Leviathan), and in many regards they are.  But "Crack The Skye" reached a broader audience and here we have the sound of a mature, and dare I say more "mainstream" sound.   Producer Brendan O'Brien together with the band achieved in creating a fine balance between the whiplash time changes and complex song structures, while not sacrificing the "song" factor.

The band refers to this album as "The Album of Our Lives".  We can't wait for what's in store for Mastodon after this masterpiece!

Favorite track:  Quintessence

3.  Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Lining

In my opinion, Black Clouds & Silver Lining is the best Dream Theater album since "Train of Thought", and one of the best DT albums overall.   Portnoy and the gang have become the leaders in Prog, and releases like this leap them a step closer in the evolution of their status as Progressive legends.

Each of the trax on Black Clouds & Silver Lining are complete.  The melodies are memorable, guitars are heavy and groovin', and Jordan Rudess offers his best performance with DT.

Favrotie Track: "The Best of Times" - a memorable and touching piece which will go down as one of the Dream Theater classic songs.

Carpe Diem!

4.  Muse - The Resistance

Prog cross over UK band MUSE has released one of the year's most popular "Rock" albums of 2009.  This album is filled with anthems.  Hooky lead melodies,  synth driven riffs, bluesy & raunchy guitars mixed with classical piano make "The Resistance" a really interesting and fun listen.

"Uprising" kicks off the album and sets the atmosphere for this journey that transports us to pop, melodic, electro, Queen influenced, epic album.  Chopin's "Nocturne in E Flat Minor" fuses beautifully at the end of "United States of Eurasia".  Even the often used "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven fits in beautifully in "ExoGenesis: Symphony Part 3".

At first listen, was average, after many listens, it really grows on you and settles itself into your favorites in the stereo system pile, or iPod.

Can't wait to hear it again!

Favorite Track: Guiding Light

5. Porcupine Tree - The Incident

10th studio album from UK's Psych - art rock - progressive band Porcupine Tree.  Fronted by Steven Wilson (Opeth producer amongst others).  Dark, heavy trax like "The Incident" are haunting and mysterious.  "Octane Twisted", perhaps the best track on this album is where everything comes together on the album, and from then on, it continues to grow and finally explodes on "Circle of Maniacs".

The ghosts of Pink Floyd must have made their way into the studio at one point during this album.  "Time Flies" takes us on an "Animals" trip, while bits and pieces from other songs throw a tribute to Atom Heart Mother & Meddle.

This Double CD is great as the sum of all the pieces.  Listening to a song here or there will not cut it.   However, making an experience out of "The Incident" is well worth it and one that will be visited again and again.

Favorite Track: "Circle of Maniacs"

LABEL SPOTLIGHT: METAL BLADE RECORDS page on LoudTrax.com

by AM 19. December 2009 00:45

LoudTrax.com is proud to present the Metal Blade Records label page, including over 400 really loud albums!  See label page HERE

For every genre of music there are a handful of record labels that pave the way for influential and groundbreaking artists to emerge.  Labels that are the pioneers in their respect genres and give talented artists the opportunity to become legends.

In Heavy Metal, no one will disagree that one of the most important labels is METAL BLADE RECORDS.  "The noise began 27 years ago."  A music starved LA kid named Brian Slagel, gets sick of watching the local metal scene being ignored by the major labels.   Working days at legendary metal emporium Oz Records and nights putting together one of the first metal fanzines, The New Heavy Metal Revue, Slagel asks some distributor friends if they'd be interested in circulating a compilation of unsigned bands if he put it together. The distributors said yes and Metal Blade Records was born.  Slagel pieced together the bands that would grace the label's first release - "The New Heavy Metal Revue presents Metal Massacre".   Metallica, Ratt and Black 'N' Blue were just a few of the willing locals. Except before Metal Massacre, Metallica didn't exist.

So now for over 27 years Metal Blade Records has been setting the trend in heavy metal music without compromising its underground beginnings. Brian Slagel and Metal Blade Records have without a doubt had a major role in developing the American metal scene since day one and remains one of the most essential sources of metal music today. Since it’s beginnings in 1982, Metal Blade Records has unleashed some of the most influential and significant metal acts like Slayer, Metallica, Cannibal Corpse, GWAR, Six Feet Under, and King Diamond while developing acts like As I Lay Dying, Unearth, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amon Amarth, Job For a Cowboy, The Red Chord, Hate Eternal, Shai Hulud, Soilent Green, Whitechapel, Goatwhore, The Ocean, Brain Drill, Epicurean and 3 just to name a few. There are few who can argue that Metal Blade is one of the leading independent metal labels around!

Key new releases by Metal Blade include:

The Black Dahlia Murder - Deflorate preview

Amon Amarth - The Crusher (Bonus Edition) preview

Goatwhore - Carving Out The Eyes Of God (LOUDTRAX ALBUM OF THE MONTH)

FREE DOWNLOAD & CONTEST - Scum of the Earth

by AM 16. December 2009 23:17

Sleaze FreakScum Of The Earth
"Bombshell From Hell" (mp3)
from "Sleaze Freak"
(Eclipse Records, inc.)

Click on the link above for a free download of "Bombshell From Hell".

Scum of the Earth consists of Mike RIGGS, the long time Guitarist for Rob Zombie.  There are 2 avenues of to take when listening to this record.  Sure, it sounds like Rob Zombie.  No doubt.  Although some Rob Zombie fans have complained about this being a soundalike, many others like me see this as the work of the man who continues to offer what he is great at, and what he had been doing for the last 8 years or so.  On Sleaze Freak, Riggs created his own version of the madness we came to know from Zombie years.

Riggs signature guitar sound is a key force in this album.  The music is stomping, spooky and sleazy.  Metal godess, Metal Sanaz is featured on guest vocals on "Love Pig".  Key trax off this album are "Bombshell from Hell", "Sleaze Freak" & "Devilscum"

Beautiful Art pieces by Abel Adames

by AM 11. December 2009 02:06

Abel Adames / DarkSideOf Collages

Artist Abel Adames has been creating beautiful and original works of art inspired by Progressive rock, and heavy metal artists.  His detailed pieces are collages which contain images from a specific theme and or artist.  For example, his work "Thought of Dreams" is a collage of the Dream Theater covers, the Greatest Gig in the Sky, a collage of Pink Floyd artwork, and Fly By Night, a RUSH collage.

Below are some examples.

Check out his site HTTP://DARKSIDEOFCOLLAGES.BLOGSPOT.COM, where you can view his works and even download them and use as your background.  12 x 18 high quality prints are also available to purchase.

I hooked up with Abel for an interview.

LOUDTRAX: What Inspires you to create these collages?

ABEL: Well,  the idea first hit me as one day I saw a band collage that someone did or some sort of collage and I thought “ Gee, I can do this but different and better ” hehe!  Then I created my first collage “favorite 70’s Concept albums”.   I posted it on a prog website (progarchives.com) and I received many positive comments, praises and subjections.  I am guessing from the success of that first collage I was encouraged and inspired to continue.

Also, one of the major inspirations is my love and passion for the music that these bands had created. They have a very special place in my life since I was 13 years old. It had gained big part in my heart that I don’t think I can’t live without it.  I had cried listening to Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Dark side Of the Moon and Genesis’s A trick Of The Tail, to mention just a few.  If you catch me walking on the street you will see me constancy doing air guitar and air drums of songs by RUSH.

So I wanted to pay tribute to these bands that I had love with these collages.

Now these days the idea of creating “New Art” is an always inspiring. I had received many complements and people saying that my collages are unique and like nothing they ever seen before. That is a great inspiration.

LOUDTRAX: How often do you create a piece?

ABEL: I would love to make collages as often as possible, at least one every other month, but because of lack of time, I can’t really.  My 9-5:30 job won’t allow it.  I am married man, a single parent raising a 13 year old girl.  Which, I love by the way.  So, between all of that, I manage to make these collages.  It usually takes from one month to 3 months, when I can.   There’re had been many sleepless nights.

I made 6 collages this year compared with only 3 last year.

LOUDTRAX: I noticed there is an exhibition for your work in India.  Are there other exhibitions?  When, Where?

ABEL: So far this is the first time that my collages are going to be exhibited in a gallery and I am hoping that this isn’t the last.  Let’s see how it goes.  My collages have been featured in many blogs and websites.  I am very honored to have these collages exhibit at this gallery.  They had exhibited artwork by 2 of my major influences and inspirations such as Salvador Dali and Picasso.  I love and admire Dali’s work.

LOUDTRAX:  Have you ever been approached by artists/musicians to create artwork for there albums?

ABEL: I had done an album cover for a band Solder Theory (http://www.myspace.com/soldertheory)

They are a prog band and will have their debut album next year. So hopefully there will be more in the near future.

LOUDTRAX: What artists would you most like to collaborate with and create a custom piece for?

ABEL: I don’t have a specific band that I would like to work for.   As long isn’t for a Rap project it will be fine!  I guess an established band that has plenty of material that I can work on would be great one.  I would love to get approached by progressive rock labels or one the Progressive rock festival (Progfest, Nearfest) promoters and design some poster for them, that would be awesome.  Prog is my thing but it doesn’t have to be prog all the time.

LOUDTRAX: Do you ever get hassled by artists or record labels who do not want you to create art using their images?  How do you feel about that?

ABEL: So far I hadn’t been.  Lucky me!  I have sent emails to the bands I had done collages for.  Some bands had given me the Ok and even praises for the collages, but some have never responded.  I see it as a free promotion and exposure to rock fans that have never heard of these bands.  For Instance, when I created the collage about Gentle Giant, many of the fans of the collages never heard of them.  The Idea is to spread the word about prog music with colorful artwork.  I am just hoping that I won’t get hassled because I am not making these collages for money and I am not hired to make them. I do ask for a donation to the visitor of my blog and I sell copies of the collages here and there, but it isn’t that I am making thousands of dollars. Otherwise I would quit my 9 to 5 job.

LOUDTRAX: How many images do you typically use in each piece?  Are they all from album covers, or other sources as well?

ABEL: It depends on the band that I am creating the collage for. If the band has many albums and I can find tons of high quality jpegs the better.  I had used over 100 images on my very last collage, the one dedicated to progressive Metal.  Most are the album covers, promo pictures  and even my own personal pictures of the band. On some collages as a background image I used my own which was taken by me. I do that so it can be a more personal collage. For example, in the Porcupine Tree collage the tree and Sky image are my own photos, also, I created some part of the clouds and background.  Another, example, in the Genesis collage, the whole sky and clouds and all lighting effects were all done in Photoshop. They aren’t real pictures... I always challenge myself when I decide to create a new collage and I always try hard to make it different from all of them, but in the same style.

Thank you.

Label Spotlight : RELAPSE RECORDS

by AM 11. December 2009 00:20

As fellow fans of music, especially LOUD music, we invite to check out the label page of RELAPSE RECORDS.  Click HERE

Based in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, Relapse Records is world-renowned for its diversity and dedication to decidedly left-of-center music.  Relapse sidesteps the trends of the day. In the fourteen years since the label’s inception, Relapse has established itself as a fan’s label – one that combines an enthusiasm for providing extreme music fans with the highest quality, most well-packaged releases with a forward-thinking musical foresight.

This label first got our attention with the release of "The Red Album" by Baroness.  As some of you might remember, it was our "ALBUM OF THE MONTH" when LoudTrax launched this past summer.

Currently their artists lists includes the most important artists in Death Metal, Grindcore, Heavy Metal, and other Metal Genres.  Key artists and releases on Relapse include:

Mastodon's benchmark album "Leviathan".  See artist page here

Baroness - The Blue Record preview

Dying Fetus - Descend Into Depravity.  See artist page here

Cephalic Carnage - Conforming to Abnormality.  See artist page here

CHICKENFOOT - Satriani meets Hagar, Anthony and Chad Smith

by AM 3. December 2009 22:26

GENRE:  ROCK

Chickenfoot

Been meaning to check out this super group project since it's release in June 2009.  It has since been certified GOLD, and the last date of the tour is this weekend, Dec. 5, 2009 in Las Vegas.  Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Chad Smith = Chickenfoot

If you have not checked it out yet, here's what to expect.

Hagar and Anthony have had the pleasure of playing alongside one of rock's greatest guitarists.  I think it is fair to say they teamed up with a more than suitable alternative with Satriani leading the riffs and solos departments.  As for Chad Smith, a diverse element which adds a nice "spice" in this cooking pot, although he brings more of us "banging rock" hat than his "funky groovy" hat.

Aside from being high, expectations are mixed - will it be technical or more song oriented?  Will there be the benchmark Michael Anthony backup vocals?  Will Chad Smith funk it up a little?

The result, a more straight forward rock album than expected.  If someone told me this was a new Van Halen album, I would not argue during a quick listen.  However, after a closer listen, one notices the greatness of what Satriani adds.  His suave bends, vocal style leads, at times bluesy, and his full body sound that roars like it has been aged to perfection longer than Michael Anthony's whiskey collection, or mine for that matter.  We also notice a lot less open hi hats that we are used to with Alex Van Halen.  Ok so enough with the obvious VH comparison.

Songs are good, memorable.  Fair to say it's an album more for Van Halen fans than for Satriani fans and Red Hot Chili Peppers fans.  Key trax are Turnin' Left, Sexy Little Thing,
Learning to Fall, Get It Up & My Kinda Girl - Satriani rips it up on this one and Michael Anthony backups are alive and well.

Simpy put, this is what you would expect from 4 masters of their respective instruments.  Are there still people out there who don't give Michael Anthony the credit he deserves!?  Hey, you try and play bass with Satch and Eddie!

Here's a quote from their website:
"I write what comes to mind," Hagar says. "I'm not bound by anything subject-wise. I'm inspired by the music. When I heard the music Joe was going for, it made me reach, it made me stretch. I think it made me sing in a way that I normally wouldn't have done. We seem to have that kind of effect on each other."

Satriani agrees. "People have this idea of what this band is about, or what Sammy Hagar is about as a lyricist and a vocalist. The thing is that we manage to get each guy to up his game in a non-confrontational way. When I play with Chickenfoot, I find myself wanting to give them more all the time. I don't hold anything back. I think the rest of the guys feel the same way."

Future plans for the moment include Chad getting together with RHCP, Sammy and Mike are heading to Cabo and Joe has a live DVD coming in the new year. The band promised they have more exciting CHICKENFOOT news coming soon!
